What is Health Coaching?

Rediscover Health started as a health coaching practice in 2017 and has since then evolved into what it is today: your source of quality health information, delicious and nourishing food recipes, herbal and natural remedies, and a support system to bring you into healthy bliss. Rediscover Health bridges health coaching with personalized, integrative nutrition consulting to bring you a thriving practice helping all people achieve optimal wellness. Our mission is to empower people to realize their healing potential and to educate people on how they can use the power of food, herbs, and holistic lifestyle practices to Rediscover Health. I have worked with clients that wanted to lose weight, balance their blood sugar, reduce their triglycerides, find balance in their life, poop better, and so much more. Nutrition impacts almost every aspect of our lives. It is the center point of wellness. Rediscover Health builds on the principles of functional nutrition using food as medicine and finds balance in other areas that influence life like exercise, sleep, and relationships. This merge of health coaching and integrative nutrition consulting helps people build sustainable routines for long-lasting results.

What is Health Coaching?

Health and wellness coaching has countless definitions. The Institute of Integrative Nutrition defines a health coach as “A Health Coach is a supportive mentor and wellness authority who helps others feel their best through individualized food and lifestyle changes that meet their unique needs and health goals.”

The National Board of Health and Wellness Coaches has taken the first steps at uniting and regulating the role of a health coach. The purpose of a health coach is to:

“partner with clients seeking self-directed, lasting changes, aligned with their values, which promote health and wellness and, thereby, enhance well-being. In the course of their work health and wellness coaches display unconditional positive regard for their clients and a belief in their capacity for change, and honoring that each client is an expert on his or her life, while ensuring that all interactions are respectful and non-judgmental” (NBHWC, 2020).

This definition is a compelling description of the work of Rediscover Health. We laid our foundation on the values and teachings of health coaching. We believe in a client-centered partnership, meaning the client leads the way. In our sessions together, we discuss ideal wellness goals and the current challenges that may be interfering with change. You are the expert in your life. As the coach, my job is to support you, play on your strengths, help you set achievable and sustainable steps towards your goals, empower you to reach them, provide education when necessary, and celebrate your outcomes! I am a resourceful cheerleader if you will.

What is integrative and functional nutrition consulting?

Integrative and functional nutrition is similar to health coaching on the aspect that it is client-centered and identifies the whole person and not just a condition. Functional nutrition works beyond the chief complaint. As a functional nutrition practitioner, I dive into the client’s history and identify potential root causes and triggers of the current health concern. Functional and integrative nutrition doesn’t solely focus on food but various other lifestyle factors such as sleep and stress that can impact a person’s health just as equally. We focus on evidence-based nutrition and holistic approaches to wellness.

The American Nutrition Associate’s website states:

“Nutrition is the core element of our health and prevents and reverse disease. Nutrition is personal. Our biology is unique; personalized nutrition most powerfully taps our health potential. Nutrition is for everyone. Every person deserves access to healthy food and unbiased, science-based nutrition knowledge”

I mentioned earlier that I believe nutrition is the center of life. The foods we eat can fight disease or feed it. Food can turn on or off genes. We need nutrients to survive and thrive. Yet, we have gaps in our health care system. The doctors tell you to eat better, but they don’t provide education and support to make those changes into your life. The internet has so much information that it is overwhelming for people that are already not feeling well—let me do that for you. Rediscover Health bridges the gap between real and valid food advice and health.

Although I don’t make medical diagnoses, my education and training allow me to identify nutritional needs and requirements for specific conditions and wellness goals. The beauty of Rediscover Health is that we work together to incorporate therapeutic nutrition and lifestyle habits into your daily routine using practical applications to enhance your health. I help rebuild people’s relationships with food and themselves, encourage self-compassion, and hold space for people as they transition phases in their lives. I work with clients that are too frazzled from daily life to take the first step towards bettering their health. I work with moms that can’t find the time to meal prep and picky eater who want to start eating better. From balancing blood sugar and regulating bowel movements to regaining vibrancy and energy, I work with you, beside you, to help you Rediscover Health.
